Do not create these intentions based on external factors like Black Friday sales, or how you will look when you run into your ex in your hometown, instead turn inward (perhaps through a chakra scanning meditation) and see what arises. </p><div class="pullquote"><p>Use this quiet, dark, reflective time to nourish your fire - Shiva Rea</p></div><p>There are many great events and workshops in NYC happening this month! We all say it, whether it be to ourselves or to others. My teacher pointed out that it&#8217;s a strange thing to say. It is not necessary to &#8220;earn&#8221; or &#8220;deserve&#8221; rest. Rest is part of being human. If you are tired, or overwhelmed, down, or just feel like hanging out, then rest is always allowed. </p><p>As we move toward November, and begin considering how giving thanks relates to our yoga and meditation practice, understand that giving yourself the ability and permission to rest is a big &#8220;thank you&#8221; to your body and mind for all they do. Remember that you don&#8217;t need to <em>do</em> anything at all to deserve or earn rest. </p><p>Now onto the NYC Yoga News. It&#8217;s one of the most beautiful seasons in the city and a perfect time to reconnect with the <strong>Self</strong>. I found myself stocking up on sweets. Be tender with yourself while you consider that you may already have exactly what you are searching for. Hint: It&#8217;s right there, within you. </p><p>These next few weeks, as we experience the Fall equinox, practice yoga that is slow, warm, and grounding. </p><h3>1) Retreat to Hudson with Sky Ting&#8217;s Krissy Jones </h3><h4><strong>Sky Ting | October 10-13 | <a href="https://www.skyting.com/events/sky-ting-downtown-hudson-with-krissy-jones-and-lauren-gerrie">Link to sign up</a></strong></h4><p>This is not technically New York City, but I can&#8217;t think of a more beautiful place to be during October. A girls trip to Sardegna filled with beaches, pop music, too much spritz, and many laughs. No matter where I am traveling or who I am traveling with, I always bring yoga along. It&#8217;s duty free. </p><p>If you have time and the ability to try a local yoga studio, you must! Do not fear language barriers. I have taken classes in Hebrew, Spanish, French, Portuguese.. Seeing how different cultures experience the practice is well worth the occasional looks of confusion.. </p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://www.nycyoganews.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Thanks for reading! If you have a towel and/or pillows to support you in these positions, use them! 2) For my practice, I chose to use the ocean waves as the soundtrack; I have linked a <a href="https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1yXsH5vNUfQFPPhVMLLoyE">Spotify Yin Playlist </a> here for your use if you so choose! 3) When I practice Yin alone, I count up to 60 in each pose. In traditional yin practices, you hold each pose for 3-7 minutes. I have found that as my body relaxes, I count to 60 <strong>so slowly </strong>that I end up staying in the postures for much longer than 60 seconds. It works for me. If you don&#8217;t feel like counting, there are a few apps like Insight Timer that will &#8220;gong&#8221; for you and gently alert you to change poses. </p><div class="native-video-embed" data-component-name="VideoPlaceholder" data-attrs="{&quot;mediaUploadId&quot;:&quot;6a7fe776-c063-463c-9a23-a4abca219818&quot;,&quot;duration&quot;:null}"></div><p><strong>Childs Pose</strong> - Wake up your hips. Relax your face muscles. Start to ground. </p><p><strong>Twisted Childs Pose</strong> - Thread your right arm under your left. Relax your right cheek into the earth. Relax your neck and your jaw. Feel the tension in your right shoulder release. It may feel nice to find some gentle cat/cows before you transition to the second side. </p><p><strong>Thunderbolt Post</strong> - Sit back on your heels. Place your hands on your lap. Reset. Relax your right ear to your right shoulder, and then relax your left ear to your left shoulder. It may feel nice to tuck your toes under and stretch the balls of your feet in this posture, but this can also be very intense. It may feel nice to bind your hands at your lumbar spine as your roll your head side to side. </p><p><strong>Swan Pose</strong> - Send your right knee forward and ease your upper body over your shin. In Yin, do not worry about bringing your right shin bone forward. Instead, find a place where you can feel deep relaxation. Then, switch sides. It may feel nice to find a downward facing dog between sides. </p><p><strong>Wide Legged Forward Fold -</strong> Let the backs of your legs lengthen. It may feel nice to place a pillow under your chest or forehead. </p><p><strong>Reclined Twist</strong> - Take the variation that your body is asking you for. Take up space. Inhale to expand, and exhale to go deeper. </p><p><strong>Bananasana - </strong>Lay on your back and make a star shape with your arms and legs. Cross your right ankle on top of your left ankle and catch your right wrist with your left hand. Feel a gentle stretch along your right side body. Do not strain your thighs. Relax your shoulders. Find the second side. </p><p><strong>Fish Pose -</strong> Place your forearms and the top of your head on the earth. Feel opening in your heart. If this is too much, place a pillow under your spine for a supported variation. </p><p><strong>Rest -</strong> I chose to find meditation in a seat. You may choose to stay lying down. Whatever you do, be still. </p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!MhIF!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F622504fb-145a-4523-9888-16d70dba6764_768x1024.jpeg" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!MhIF!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F622504fb-145a-4523-9888-16d70dba6764_768x1024.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!MhIF!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F622504fb-145a-4523-9888-16d70dba6764_768x1024.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!MhIF!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F622504fb-145a-4523-9888-16d70dba6764_768x1024.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!MhIF!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F622504fb-145a-4523-9888-16d70dba6764_768x1024.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!MhIF!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F622504fb-145a-4523-9888-16d70dba6764_768x1024.jpeg" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/622504fb-145a-4523-9888-16d70dba6764_768x1024.jpeg&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:null,&quot;width&quot;:null,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:268154,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://www.nycyoganews.com/i/168716434?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F622504fb-145a-4523-9888-16d70dba6764_768x1024.jpeg&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!MhIF!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F622504fb-145a-4523-9888-16d70dba6764_768x1024.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!MhIF!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F622504fb-145a-4523-9888-16d70dba6764_768x1024.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!MhIF!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F622504fb-145a-4523-9888-16d70dba6764_768x1024.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!MhIF!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F622504fb-145a-4523-9888-16d70dba6764_768x1024.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div></div></div></a></figure></div><p></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://www.nycyoganews.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Thanks for reading! PS - It&#8217;s my new favorite bathhouse in NYC because its actually CLEAN (However.. you still cant escape the Tik-Tok spa goers, who film all over the bathhouse, which is my ultimate NYC bathhouse pet-peeve). After hours of sweating out my entire liquid profile, I hung out on my rooftop, where I continued to sweat, had a few beers, and then retired to sleep. It may not come as a surprise that when it was time to teach 2 back to back hot yoga classes the next morning I was feeling woozy. </p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://www.nycyoganews.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Thanks for reading! I have survived several hot summers as a yoga instructor, and every year I see students and teachers (including me this past weekend!) forget how much the heat affects us. This weekend reminded me that the heat can be dangerous. </p><p>I am still finding my favorite hydration methods; Liquid IV and sports drinks work intermittently. There is only one surefire way to feel completely COOL in a hot yoga class, and it is <strong>to drink a lot of water the night before a class</strong>. Take care of yourselves yogis, and don&#8217;t push past comfort. This is Ahimsa in practice. </p><h3>UNHEATED CLASSES - </h3><p>If you are a hot yoga fiend like me (in it for the flexibility, calorie burn, increased heart rate, or detoxification, etc..) heatwaves are a great time to try unheated studios. They will still be hot, trust me. </p><p>Some of my favorite studios that offer unheated classes in the city, are:<a href="https://theshala.com/"> The Shala</a>, <a href="https://soukstudio.com/">Souk</a>, <a href="https://yogamaya.com/">Yogamaya</a>, <a href="https://yogisandyoginis.com/">Yogis &amp; Yoginis</a>, <a href="https://babycobrayoga.com/">Baby Cobra </a>, <a href="https://www.stmarksyoga.com/">St Marks Yoga</a>, <a href="https://www.threejewels.org/">Three Jewels</a>, <a href="https://bhakticenter.org/yoga/">Bhakti Center </a></p><p>(There is a post about the best HOT yoga in the city incoming..) </p><h3>THE HEART FIRE - </h3><p>In her book <em>tending the heart fire</em>, Shiva Rae talks about the summer heat and how yogis can care for themselves during this time of depletion. She notes the <strong>5 anchors for the summer season</strong>, which I have summarized here: 1) Balance excess fire that overstimulates the pitta dosha by staying relaxed, calm, and cool and by tending the fiery emotions like impatience and irritation, 2) Shift your rhythm from manifestation to celebration. Take time to slow down. Avoid overexerting, 3) Breathe fresh air, 4) Focus on cooling the skin, 5) Eat and drink in ways that balance the pitta dosha by enjoying in-season fruits and vegetables and sipping warm water to maintain and regulate body temperature. </p><p>Shiva later encourages restorative walking, and asanas that remove excess heat from the body like backbends and forward bends..</p><p>Stay cool friends! </p><p>`</p><p></p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://www.nycyoganews.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Thanks for reading! The scene has been steadily (re)growing since the pandemic, and as a yoga fiend living in Brooklyn, I feel overwhelmed by options. So, if you have a summer Friday off, or a weekend for R&amp;R, here are the best options (IMO) New York has to offer this July. </p><p>*In no particular order* </p><h3>1. Sound Healing at Humming Puppy </h3><p>That&#8217;s right. This Flatiron based studio is known for it&#8217;s Hummmm, so what better place to sound bath? </p><p>July 18th | 7:30 - 8:45pm | $50 </p><p><a href="https://www.hummingpuppy.com/nyc/events">Link to sign up</a></p><div class="native-video-embed" data-component-name="VideoPlaceholder" data-attrs="{&quot;mediaUploadId&quot;:&quot;4454af92-c444-4204-9eaf-095618135352&quot;,&quot;duration&quot;:null}"></div><p></p><h3>2. New Moon Women&#8217;s Circle </h3><p>I am a huge Maria Cutrona stan, so her name <strong>will</strong> be popping up on this newsletter.. This July, Maria is hosting a women&#8217;s circle (think yoga, journaling, discussion) at Prema (a Brooklyn sanctuary located at 976 Fulton Street). </p><p>July 26th | 6:30 - 8:30pm | $25 </p><p><a href="https://www.premayogabrooklyn.com/flow">Link to sign up </a></p><h3>3. Souk Souk Souk </h3><p>Between Rima Rabbath&#8217;s limitless energy, the disco ball hanging from their beautiful high ceilinged studio, and the training offerings, when you are at Souk, you know you are at one of the best yoga studios in the world. That&#8217;s so New York of you! </p><p>This summer, Souk is hosting a Mentorship Program; If you can&#8217;t cough up the $2,800 fee (like me&#8230;) you are still in luck! Many of the workshops and classes will be open to the public, including a 3 hour workshop called &#8220;Anatomy of a Class&#8221; with Jules Febre &amp; Martyna Eder. Think: Sequence, Theme, Pace, Atmosphere. </p><p>July 19th | 1:30 - 4:30pm | $75 </p><p><a href="https://soukstudio.com/workshops">Link to sign up </a></p><h3>4. Summer 1 Month Immersion at Yogamaya </h3><p>If you are looking to earn your 200 hour yoga teaching certification, a summer immersion is a GREAT option (that&#8217;s how I did it!). Bryn at Yogamaya is a super empowering female leader in the New York City yoga space, and I have only heard <strong>great things</strong> about their YTT programs.
